This is the largest of Aztalan's three surviving flat-topped platform mounds, built up gradually in layers over the life of the settlement in the southwest corner of the stockaded village. Mounds like this one are thought to have supported important structures or served ceremonial purposes, a pattern seen across other Mississippian culture sites in the central and southern United States. A second, slightly smaller mound sits in the village's northwest corner; a third, smallest mound stood along the east side near the river.
